Nudism At The Drop Of A Hat
When Germans enjoy something they tend to get a little enthusiastic. Take nudism. Give a German a bit of sunshine, temps in the seventies, a city park, and they’re good to go. Off come the tops and trousers, the socks and shoes. Excuse me Gert, I’m going to practice nudism.
Any time we add to the Munich Englisch Garden galleries we’re reminded of just how close nudism is to the German heart. Imagine Central Park in New York being an FKK nudist mecca. Step off Fifth Avenue and out of your clothes—and where better? Central Park is one of our favorites, and is now privy to topless women on better days.
Most German community centers in towns large or small offer nude swimming and coed saunas for all ages and mixes. It doesn’t raise an eyebrow for a man to walk naked and proud into the womens’ locker room because locker rooms are coed. Why build two? So practical.
I’ve met other American men doing business in Germany and typically, and timidly, we reach a point in conversation where voices lower and one of us will ask, “Have you been to the health clubs?” They’re hard to miss, as their brochures are in the lobby of most hotels and tend to put Playboy to shame.
Generally all of Europe offers plenty of nudist opportunities. But from Germany eastward it becomes a religion.
